The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) is a university-based regional health care system focused on serving the health care needs of Maryland.

We bring innovation, discovery and research to the care we provide all while educating the state’s future physicians and health care professionals through our partnership with the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the UM Schools of Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work and Dentistry in Baltimore. As one of the largest private employers in the state, the health system's more than 29,000 employees and 4,600 affiliated physicians provide primary and specialty care in more than 150 locations and at 12 hospitals. UMMS' flagship academic campus, the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, is recognized regionally and nationally for excellence and innovation in specialized care. Our acute care and specialty rehabilitation hospitals serve urban, suburban and rural communities and are located in 13 counties across the state. In addition, UMMS operates health insurance plans serving Medicare and Medicaid members.

Vision for the System

The University of Maryland Medical System delivers approximately 25 percent of all hospital care in Maryland. We also serve a vital role in our state’s economy by employing 28,000 dedicated men and women who work tirelessly to help people every day. As such, it is vital that we lead the way into the future of health care with a clear vision.

How We Are Working Toward Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

The past few years have been a wake-up call for many to the inequities, injustices and systems in place that create barriers for many people based on their race, ethnicity, background, beliefs, disability, gender, sexual orientation or gender identity.

During this time, our nation began to acknowledge the injustices that many have long endured, and we saw the global pandemic's more severe impact the most vulnerable members of our society. At University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), we have been evaluating how we’re addressing equity, diversity and inclusion at all levels and locations of our organization. We have been having tough conversations, examining our policies and truly listening to our employees, patients and neighbors. As a result, we have developed a multi-year plan, backed by a $40 million investment, that outlines our commitment to equity in care delivery, diversity in our workforce, meaningful investments in local communities and expanded opportunities for minority-owned businesses.
